Some of you remember how it was possible to change the boot logo screen ofWindows 95/98. I'm not sure why anyone would go into the trouble of actuallydoing it, but it seems that it is possible to do the same for Windows Vista. Byusing a freeware 3rd-party tool called Vista Boot Logo Generator (written byDan Smith), you can easily change the Windows Vista boot screen and use anyhigh resolution image or photo as your boot screen.
All you need is two images at 800×600 and1024×768 saved as 24-bit Windows bitmaps
Next, follow these steps:
Download Dan Smith’s Vista Boot Logo Generator (see link below). Install and run from the link in the Start Menu.
1. Hit Browse for image and select both the 800×600 and1024×768 resolution bitmap files for your boot screen.
2. Click on File and select Save Boot Screen File As tosave your file.
3. 5. Next, you will need to replace the winload.exe.muifile in c:'Windows'System32'en-us with the one you just created. Before youcopy in your new file, make a backup of the original. You will need to takeownership of all files in the en-us directory, and also give your account filepermissions to replace the files in order to overwrite the original file withthe new winload.exe.mui file. If you don't, you'll be prompted with this error:To do so, log on as anadministrator (if you have not done it by now). Open Windows Explorer and go tothe c:'Windows'System32' folder. Right click on the winload.exe.mui file andselect Properties. Next, click on Advanced. Click on the Ownership tab,and click Edit. If you are prompted withthe User Account Control box, click Continue. Click to select the Administratoraccount, or better, the user that you're currently using and which hasAdministrative capabilities, in my case, Daniel. Click Ok. Back in the Security tab,click Edit to add your user account. If you are prompted withthe User Account Control box, click Continue. Click Add, select thedesired user account (in my case – Daniel), and click Ok. After it is shown in thelist, select it and click the Full Control checkbox. Click Ok all the way out.
4. Now you can save the modified logon file in thec:'Windows'System32'en-us directory. You will be prompted to overwrite theexisting file, click Ok.
5. Next, you'll be prompted to change the boot setting inthe MSCONFIG tool. Click Ok.
6. Now, click on the Start button and type in “MSCONFIG”in the textbox.
7. If you are prompted with the User Account Control box,click Continue.
8. Once the System Configuration tool loads, click on theBoot tab.
9. Under Boot Options check “No GUI Boot”.
10. Youwill be prompted to reboot. If you want to, press Restart to see the newscreen.
11. Thisis your new boot screen. Lame, huh?
After go through the step, You can view your new Windows Vista boot screen.In case you messed up your files and would like to get the original files back,you can use the Windows Vista installation DVD to boot up and replace thewinload.exe.mui file with your backup.
** NOTE ** You CAN'T cange windows 7's boot screen as of yet because the associated files are LOCKED. **
